Horse Trade Theater Group
& Tobacco Bar Theatre Company Present

A Preview Run of "ROCKSHOW"
Rock Theater with an adrenaline chaser

Written & Directed by Paul Stancato
Composed by co-creator Matt Uremovich & Chris Blisset
Musical Director, Chris Blisset

Pre-Show Entertainment by DJ T-Justice

ROCKSHOW is a live performance experience that crosses the boundaries of theater and rock
to give audiences a pure rush of adrenaline and entertainment.

Writer/Director PAUL STANCATO coined the term "Rock Theater"
to describe "a new kind of theater that brings rock music, in its purest form, to the stage."

ROCKSHOW is the realization of Stancato's mission to bring a new generation to Off-Broadway by providing an experience that cross-pollinates original rock music, theater and audience interaction.

This preview run of ROCKSHOW is NOT a staged reading or a workshop:
it's a fully-realized performance with (minimal) sets and costumes,
where the cast is off-book and the band plays seven tight, polished songs that will be part of the final score.

"Paul Stancato directs and choreographs an accomplished performance."
The Village Voice

SYNOPSIS
On the eve of their CD release party, members of the aging NYC band GROUP THERAPY all have their own reasons for staying in or leaving. Meanwhile, financial investor Christine is manipulating lead guitar player Bobby into giving her manager status; drummer Michael, dealing with insecurity and self worth issues, sees through her. 32 year-old Adam, the oldest, must choose between his friends or the record label that is courting him into signing as a solo artist. Bass player Mary finds herself caught in the middle while increasingly attracted to Adam. Add to the mix a music critic, a record label executive and a soulful bartender and you've got one night that could make or break a band's career.

"ROCK THEATER" A New Genre, For A New Generation of Theatergoers ROCKSHOW is a live performance experience that crosses the boundaries of theater and rock to give audiences a pure rush of adrenaline and entertainment. Writer/director PAUL STANCATO coined the term ăROCK THEATERä to describe how the play cross-pollinates original rock music, theater and audience interaction. As seen in recent shows like MOVIN' OUT and BETTY RULES, Stancato observes ăBroadway and Off-Broadway is on the verge of introducing a new kind of theater that brings rock music, in its purist form, to the stage--further redefining what theater can do."

ROCKSHOW is the realization of Stancato's unique vision that seeks to bring a new generation to the theater by taking the traditional narrative elements of a play and injecting it with the group energy created by a live concert experience.

THE PLACE: A NYC nightclub

THE SCENARIO: A make-it or break-it CD release party. As the audience walks through the door, they become nightclub patron celebrating GROUP THERAPY's independent CD release. Throughout the night, youâll see the band play and nearly self-destruct as youâre thrown into the volatile mix of record execs, press and groupies whose egos, desires and hidden agendas threaten to distract the band from achieving their ultimate goal. . .a record deal. The cast interacts with the audience, who are encouraged (but never compelled) to create their own personas; influencing the action and helping to drive the story forward.

Between the narrative action, ROCKSHOW becomes a genuine concert experience, as Group Therapy performs original material--revealing themselves as a band on the hot track to either stardom or self-destruction.

PAUL STANCATO (Writer and Director)---Winner of the 2001 FringeNYC Best Director Award for Tobacco Bar's "Einsteinâs Dreams," Stancato has long been part of the New York theatre revolution (formerly of Blue Man Group and an original cast member of De La Guarda). ROCKSHOW is a continuation of his interest in creating live experiences that cross the genres of music, theater, improv and audience interaction. ROCKSHOW's music was created with longtime friends and collaborators Matt Uremovich and Chris Blisset, whose work can be heard on Chicago's top-forty radio and in Comisky Park (home of the Chicago White Sox).
