From a religious theme park in Orlando to Christmas Day in Bethlehem comes one man’s ineptly comic and exhilarating pursuit of forgiveness.

In his latest all-true theatrical monologue, Dockery wrestles with his own lies and infidelities as he comically explores the profane and profound in the biblical story of Jesus.  Traveling from a theme park where hundreds of tourists watch as Jesus is crucified daily to the town where a billion people celebrate his birth annually, Dockery attempts to get inside the mind of a man who lived 2000 years ago, if he ever lived at all.

MARTIN DOCKERY (Playwright & Performer) is a frequent performer in New York’s storytelling scene. Over the past three years, he’s created five monologues and one play, performing them across North America and Australia. In 2011, he also headlined The London Storytelling Festival, performing three different monologues (The Bike Trip, Wanderlust, Bursting Into Flames) three nights in a row.
Wanderlust, directed by Jean-Michele Gregory, about a 5-month trek through West Africa in search of a moment of Epiphany, enjoyed successful runs in New York City, San Francisco, Orlando, London, Toronto, Winnipeg, Fresno, Charleston, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Victoria, Vancouver, Bellingham, Seattle, & Adelaide. It’s received 5-star reviews in many newspapers, and won top honors at fringe theater festivals in Orlando, London, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, & Adelaide.
The Surprise, also directed by Jean-Michele Gregory, is about secrets unveiled during a trip to Vietnam, and it ran in San Francisco & Regina after enjoying an extended run in New York City, first at The Frigid Festival, then at The soloNOVA Festival, where Martin was awarded the “2009 Breakthrough Performer of the Year.” During 2011, the show was performed in Fresno, Saskatoon, Vancouver, & Edmonton (where it was Held Over after selling out its entire run).
During 2010, Martin also toured with another autobiographical monologue entitled The Bike Trip, about the creation of LSD, through New York, Phoenix, Orlando (selected “Best of Fest” by the Orlando Sentinel), London, & Winnipeg, where it sold out much of its run. The show also played at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston in 2011.
In 2011, Martin debuted two new monologues. The Holy Land Experience, which was chosen by The Orlando Sentinel as one of their “Best of Fest,” is about a hilariously inept pilgrimage to Bethlehem on Christmas Day. And Bursting Into Flames, his first fictional monologue, about a comically terrifying excursion through the afterlife, was awarded 5-star reviews in each of Winnipeg’s 3 major papers, as well as being chosen as “Best Drama” in the Winnipeg Fringe by The CBC. He will next be performing the show in New Orleans and in early 2012 will be have a month-long run in Adelaide, Australia.
In addition, Martin also performed in his own two-person play Oh, That Wily Snake!, with runs in Fresno, Orlando, London, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, & Vancouver. The next run of the show will be in New York City in early 2012.
Martin has also traveled with Andy Christie’s The Liar Show to Edinburgh and New Orleans, as well as frequently performing with the show in his hometown of New York. He is a seven-time finalist in The Moth’s Grandslam Storytelling Championship. Also, he was a co-creator of the play C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, which ran on Broadway as The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. His play Oh, That Wily Snake! is part of a McGraw-Hill anthology textbook on literature, and The New York Times wrote that it “flashes with humor and insight.” He received his B.A. in English from Kenyon College and his M.F.A. in playwriting from Columbia University.
