Horse Trade presents
For its hotly anticipated revival of Arthur Miller's “The Crucible” Rising Sun has enlisted director Melissa Attebery to lead their stellar ensemble in a powerful and timeless depiction of how intolerance and hysteria can traverse and tear a community apart.
Rising Sun is one of the current up and coming theatre companies in the Off-Off Broadway community that is establishing a reputation for their talented ensemble of writers, directors and actors featuring a strong selection of Original works balanced by revivals of off beat published works. Rising Sun brought New York City the acclaimed revivals of “An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein” & “The Shape of Things” (2004) which was nominated for two New York Innovative Theatre Awards and most recently the critically acclaimed smash hit “Hellcab” which played for 10 weeks to sold out audiences.
Using a multi aged, Multi ethnic cast and a visual design of stark silhouettes and vivid colors inspired by the tradition of contemporary artist Kara Walker, The Crucible leads the audience to the always busy intersection of private sins , paranoia, hysteria, and intolerance. As the townsfolk accept and become active in their hysterical surroundings, feelings of genuine religious piety collide with interpersonal feuds and grudges over property, religious offices, and sexual behavior begin to boil over. These tensions, pervade the town's religious sensibility and provide the raw materials for the tumult of the Salem witch trials.
