The Orphans were formed by the late Dr. Martin de Maat, Artistic Director of Chicago's Second City, as the first class of the Second City's New York Training Center.Ê We have now been together for over three years.Ê Our current show of Long Form Improvisation has been developed under the guidance of John Thies, who helped create the form while performing with the troupe Burn Manhattan.

The Orphans' performance is the result of a very unique form of writing referred to as Spontaneous Theatre. ÊThis process of writing employs no paper or writing implement, because that would look silly on stage.Ê The show is developed for a period of roughly one hour, during which an audience is present and no revisions are made to the work. ÊNo discussion over content ever takes place prior to the performance..if that were the case, referring to ourselves as "spontaneous" would be a bold faced lie and a disservice to all humanity.Ê That said, anything really could happen and often does.
