Cocaine Dreams is a voyeuristic, surreal ride through one man's obsession with Sigmund Freud, cocaine and a beautiful woman. Dream-like sequences exploring Freud's use and advocacy of cocaine are entwined with a modern-day psychoanalysis session in which a man struggles with his conflicted loyalties to a woman and cocaine. Learn about Freud's relationships with wife Martha, daughter Anna, mentor Joseph Breuer, colleague Wilhelm Fliess and protege Carl Jung ..but most especially with the pleasures of Vin Mariani, or "Cocaine Wine" ..as embodied by a divine nymphet/muse who springs from the subconscious mind of Freud himself. Over a 15-year period, his intense professional, medicinal and recreational use of cocaine exerts a profound influence on Freud's marriage, work relationships, and dreams. Playwright Howard Pflanzer based "Cocaine Dreams" on letters and articles Freud wrote during the years he was a frequent user of cocaine. Scholars and the psychoanalytic community have speculated about the role cocaine played in the writings and theories which led to Freud's development of psychoanalysis. |
